Pioneers Week Local Football Memorabilia Display

Supported by The Guardian, this exhibition will feature team and private memorabilia from our football history in a celebration of the Swan Hill region’s sporting and cultural past. The display will include photos, team memorabilia, newspaper stories, footy records, trophies, match footballs, books, old jerseys/team jackets, club histories and more.

Date: From Friday, 5 August

Torchlight Historical Cemetery Tour

The torchlight historical cemetery tour is a new and highly anticipated addition to our 2011 Pioneers Week festivities and will be a key aspect in celebrating the past of the region.

Learn about the history of the cemetery and marvel at the narration of the very knowledgeable Shirley and Jan from the historical society.

The Swan Hill Cemetery is important to the history of our region so join your educated guides for a tour that is intelligent, informed and interesting.

Date: Friday, 5 August

Location: Meet at the Swan Hill cemetery gate.

Opera at Murray Downs Homestead

Enjoy an exclusive night of opera with magical live entertainers Voci Classico within a picturesque landscape on the gardens of the historic Murray Downs homestead.

Opera at Murray Downs homestead is a fantastic and fresh event for the Pioneers Week calendar and includes a three-course meal and a return cruise on the PS Pyap from the Pioneer Settlement.

This premier event will be held on Saturday night of Pioneers Week, so come along and be part of what is sure to be a special evening of entertainment.

Date: Saturday, 6 August

Location: Departure from the Pioneer Settlement via the PS Pyap at 6 pm

Time: 6 pm to 11 pm

Cost: $80 per person. (Includes three-course meal, and return cruise on the PS Pyap from the Pioneer Settlement, drinks at bar prices.)

Pioneers Week Antiques and Collectables Appraisal Day

Brought to you in the style of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, join expert appraisers Vanessa Crew and Adam Truscott from The Collector in Melbourne and discover the contemporary monetary value of your special item or object.

Vanessa and Adam are renowned Australia wide for their knowledge of all periods of antiques, fine arts, ephemera, collectables and Australiana and will help you attain more understanding of your object indicating in most cases its history, rarity and estimated value.

Come along and get your item appraised or view live appraisals as they happen.

A limited range of antiques/collectables stands are also available.

Speewa Heritage Collectors Club Car Boot Sale and Family Fun Day

Join in the fun with the Speewa Heritage Collectors Club as it hosts a great day out for all the family!

Find yourself a bargain at the car boot sale, peruse the market stalls, check out the classic collections on show, grab yourself a tasty bite to eat from the sausage sizzle or enjoy a refreshing treat from the cake and drinks stalls.

You can also join in with some old time games or learn the art of jewellery making.

Beat the Boat Fun Run

Join in the fun during the Pioneers Week celebrations and race against the famous PS Pyap in the Beat the Boat Fun Run.

Test your fitness along the picturesque track or simply enjoy a gentle riverside scenic walk from the historic Murray Downs wharf to the Pioneer Settlement.

Participants will have the opportunity to race along a 4.3 km or a 6.3 km course from the wharf back to the Pioneer Settlement, with the challenge to beat the Pyap as it makes its way down the river.

Register on the day or download an entry form.

Date: Sunday, 7 August.

Time: Gates open at 8.00 am – registration from 8.30 am at the Pioneer Settlement.

Rare Trades and Skills Day

Join in the bustling lives of our Mallee pioneers and step back in time to witness some of the forgotten skills of yesteryear with the Rare Trades and Skills Day at the Pioneer Settlement.

Try your hand at rope making and butter churning, wood turning or horse harnessing, printing, spinning and quilting. There will also be a steam workshop and so much more – make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to be part of what is certain to be a great family day out.

Pioneers in Racing

Get set for a great day’s racing as the Swan Hill Jockey Club hosts Pioneers in Racing as part of the entertainment for this year’s Pioneers Week.

The day out will allow for an old fashioned day at the racing track. The members’ room will be open to all guests and on course catering and bar facilities will be available while you can also have a little flutter with full TAB facilities. Make sure you get along and cheer home a winner for what is certain to be a great day out!

Date: Monday, 8 August.

State Schools Extravaganza

The return of the State schools Extravaganza is an opportunity to support our bright stars of the future when all the dance, drama and music takes place at the Swan Hill Town Hall PACC as part of this year’s Pioneers Week festival.

Schools throughout the Swan Hill region are gearing up for what will be an exciting and entertaining couple of evenings when the State Schools Extravaganza takes place on the 9 and 10 August. Schools participating this year include; Woorinen District, Nyah District, Beverford District, Ultima, Piangil, Swan Hill North, Swan Hill Primary, Swan Hill Specialist, Swan Hill College and Lake Boga.

This event will be a spectacular celebration of the talent we have in the region and is an event that is ran by the kids, about the kids and for the kids!

Date: Tuesday, 9 August and Wednesday, 10 August

Location: Swan Hill Town Hall PACC

Time: 7 pm

Admission: Limited tickets are available through the schools, $5 adults, $2 students.

Story Time at the Library

A special Story Time will be held at the Swan Hill Regional Library in conjunction with this year’s Pioneers Week, with special guest reader Swan Hill Rural City Council Mayor Cr Greg Cruickshank. 

The session is aimed at children aged three to six years, however all children are welcome to attend. 

There will also be a special craft activity following on from the Pioneers Week-themed story.
